The Things That Really Matter
A few days ago, we met an acquaintance, just in front of a local (little) supermarket (it often happens here that you have a nice chat with someone between the racks of pasta boxes and bottles of pomodori sauces of all kinds), and before we entered to make some basic shopping, we received an unexpected post-Christmas gift.
As usual, surprises come when and where and from whom you would never even imagine it.
It wasn’t a material gift, something packed in a large glittery box. No, in fact, it was just a few sentences, but they have the value of a few diamonds. They were beautiful and deep words, an honest sharing, a gift from the heart, which made me feel grateful, even satisfied, simply good. And really thanks for that!
And what it was about?
I would say, about what all of us search in life after all. About the true human connection. About finding someone with who you can share your life journey, simple things, big things, dreams, fears, thoughts, walks, shopping groceries… creating the lifestyle that fits to who you truly are.
It was a man, who, quite unexpectedly, shared his observation about us. Me and my partner and the lifestyle we chose to live.
We don’t know him very closely. It is not a person, with who we ever shared more than some sentences when meeting on the street. But in spite of “not knowing us”, he understood the value of what we’ve got much better than some of those who know us really good.
“You are the most beautiful couple on the island!” he told us with his zen smile on his face. He is tall, oozes calmness and kindness. “I said it, because I feel that you developed a lifestyle that truly fits to you both, that you are open to understand and accept each other. That you choose the life that you really want to live. And that is a beautiful thing.”
We both stared at him in astonishment.
What a surprise! I would have never imagined to hear such words from him.
Than he asked us if we also today walk over the local hills? He knows we walk a lot.
“Not today, maybe tomorrow. These days, we enjoy the Christmas mood we created at our home. These days are a little different. Differently special.”
“I don't like Christmas,” he said. “Or even the Birthdays. I don’t like that people expect you to follow some patterns. You have to follow some rules, even if you don’t like it. For me, birthday, for instance, is every day. I don’t need to wait only for one day. I celebrate every day!” he continued.
“That’s exactly our point of view and the style we live. We celebrate every day. Every day is special! Also Christmas is special, for their mood, the magic. But you can choose to live it your own way,” I said enthusiastically. I am always so happy when I meet someone who thinks the same open way, who sees more options in life than just the one predictable, prepared to follow.
“Yes, that’s true, but you need to find a right partner to share this point of view and the lifestyle. That’s why I said you are the most beautiful couple here, because I can see, you really follow your own true way.”
And he is right. So we do. Finally.
It wasn’t easy to get to this point together. A lot of hard work. We are both from different backgrounds, countries, mentality etc. And we still are on a journey to understand our own worlds. But, if you really want and most importantly, if it is something you know that it comes from the heart than anything is possible.
Anything that really matters in life.
With love,
k.
