Choosing the Magic
Yesterday, we had a little party here at our little house. We invited a few people over to share some talk and a glass or two or a few of spicy mulled wine, which you can’t get anywhere here on the island, and which is so essentially connected with the winter time for all of us, who were born a little more up, in the north.
Apart of the magically smelling hot wine, our Christmas atmosphere was, what warmed our guests.
“It’s so magical in here! So cosy! I wish that we still have the Christmas mood at home as well,” they were saying.
“And why not? It’s up to each of us, there’s no rule,” I responded.
When I was still living with my mother, I always wanted to keep the Christmas tree and decoration much longer. For me, January always felt so cold, grey and empty after all the Christmas joyful mood and magic everywhere. It was kind of depressing, with the prospect of many more weeks like that ahead… less light, low temperature, low mood.
I know, I am lucky that we are in tune with my partner. He also likes keeping the magic of Christmas in our house for as long as we want.
So yes, we still have a fully decorated Christmas tree with lights, homemade cookies on the table, we watch nice warming and inspiring movies and fairytales in the evenings and listen to old Christmas songs by Frenk Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and their friends.
And I love it. I love being reminded of magic, of the possibilities to make the choices that are in harmony with our true needs. May it be keeping the Christmas tree for a few weeks longer than is usual or anything else.
Why follow something we simply feel differently?
So now, I don’t perceive January as grey, cold, empty and depressing, and not only because I am living on an island in Southern Italy. Also here the temperatures are close to 0 during the nights, and you need to keep you warm with a thick jacket, woolen hat and sometimes even the gloves, when you go for a long walk in the afternoon. It’s the Christmas that still live here by us, it’s the little child in me that is smiling and feeling grateful and free for being finally allowed to do the things that feel simply right for her. And not only at Christmas.
I hope that you will be inspired to let your true needs guide your choices and with it you will help those around you to do the same.
Happy January (and Merry Christmas) to all,
k.
